Grades 3 – 5 Writing All Things Fun and Fascinating (Student Book)*

Humorous characters, cunning creatures, and meritorious men of history will captivate 3rd–5th graders as they learn to write with structure and style.  Moving through Units 1–7, students will take notes, summarize narrative stories, write from pictures, put together a mini research report, and compose creative essays. This class is ideal for students new to IEW in 3rd-5th grade.

Grades 4 – 7 Writing Ancient History Based Writing Lessons (Student Book)*

In this yearlong course students will write about six major ancient civilizations—Sumer, Egypt, Israel, Babylon, Greece, and Rome—while working progressively through the nine IEW units and a variety of stylistic techniques. This class can be a level A or B. Students that took Fables Myths and Fairytales should be prepared for this class. If your student found Fables difficult they might want to take All Things Fun and Fascinating. New IEW students in grades 4-7 will also do well in this class. Students should be reading at a minimum of a fourth grade level.

Grades 5 – 9 Writing US History Based Writing Lessons (Student Book) *

Students will develop their skill with the Structure and Style Writing Method while learning about interesting, important people and events in U.S. history from the explorers to the twentieth century. An optional literature component studies six novels that integrate with the historical topics used for writing assignments. Students that were in the Ancient History Based Writing class will be prepared to dive into US History. This level B class is also appropriate for students new to IEW in 5th- 9th grade. Students should be reading at a 5th grade level or higher.

Grades 6th & Up, high school students new to IEW Writing World History-Based Writing Lessons (Student Book)*

Using the Structure and Style Writing Method, students will improve their compositional skills while learning about important, interesting events and people around the globe. This yearlong course explores world history from Gutenberg to twenty-first-century technology.

Grades grades 9th – 12th World History Based Writing (Text, TBD)

Using the Structure and Style Writing Method, students will improve their compositional skills while learning about important, interesting events, and people around the globe.  This class will focus on essays and research papers and will complement the SKrafty Live Notgrass World History Class.  This class is appropriate for those in 9th – 12th grade.

Fix-It Grammar

Ingenious! Students hunt for and correct errors in daily passages that cumulatively tell a story. Fix It! encourages students to immediately apply new grammar knowledge in context, aiding in the transfer of grammar skills into their own writing.

Because every book in Fix It! Grammar is foundational to the book IEW’s recommendation is that all students begin with the first book: The Nose Tree. Each book includes advanced concepts, so even if your student knows much of the material, you can still begin with the first book and plan to move through it at a faster pace while adding the advanced concepts as he is ready for them. However, if you think your student has already mastered some of the concepts, use the IEW placement test below to determine where to start

http://iew.com/sites/default/files/page/fileattachment/Fix_It_Placement_Test.pdf

Level 1 Fix-it Grammar: The Nose Tree Student Book; The Nose Tree Teacher Book

Level 2 Fix-it Grammar: Robin Hood Student Book; Robin Hood Teacher Book

Level 3 Fix-it Grammar: Frog Prince, or Just Deserts Student Book; Frog Prince, or Just Deserts Teacher Book

Please use code JoannJ if ordering from IEW.

Minecraft Inspired Egg Carton Squids

minecraft_squid_pin

Minecraft-Inspired Egg Carton Squids

My kids love Minecraft. They not only play the game every spare moment they can get, but they also try to collect as many Minecraft-themed toys, games, cards, and anything else they can find. If you haven’t noticed, Minecraft merchandise can be expensive. But you don’t have to buy everything when you can make some of it! We had a blast making these Minecraft-inspired squids from recycled egg cartons.

Minecraft-Inspired Egg Carton Squids

  • Make these squids with your Minecraft-loving kids!
  • What you’ll need to make the Minecraft Squids:
  • Egg cartons
  • Navy, white, and black acrylic paints
  • Hot glue gun and glue sticks
  • Scissors
  • Paintbrushes

Each egg carton cup will become the body of one squid. We know that true Minecraft squids are square, but with the right paint job, your squids will look a little more squarish. Cut out the cups and trim any excess carton. We found that the outside edge cups had more cup to work with and looked the most squid-like.

minecraft_squid_1

Cut six legs for each squid from the top of the egg carton.

Glue three legs to the front of the squid and three legs to the back.

When the glue is dry, paint the entire squid, legs and all, navy.

minecraft_squid_3

When the paint dries, mix a small amount of navy and white paint together to make a slightly lighter navy. Paint a square on the front of the egg carton squid. This will become its face. Paint another small square of the lighter blue on the top of the egg carton.

Add a couple of extra drops of white paint to your lighter blue. Paint little lighter squares in the top left corner and bottom right corner of each of your darker squares.

Paint two white squares in the center of your squid’s face to make eyes. Paint one tiny corner of that square black to give your squid some pupils.

Wait for the paint to dry and display your new egg carton Minecraft squids with pride!

Minecraft Inspired Creeper Ornament

minecraft_ornament_pinp-jpg

If you have been to our booth at any of the homeschool conferences we attended this year, then you probably saw the perler bead setup we have added this year.  SuperMic and SuperGirl767 are the main proprietors of that part of our booth, and they are having so much fun with it.  They sell perler bead jewelry as well as custom perler bead creations.  With that said, we thought it would be super fun to share a plan to make your own perler bead ornament just in time to put it onto the Christmas Tree.

I know Minecraft isn’t usually thought of as a festive or particularly Christmas-y game, but once you see these cute creepers with their festive Santa hats, you’ll want to transform all your favorite Minecraft blocks into Christmas blocks. These melty bead Minecraft ornaments are so easy to make, even young kids will have a blast making them. Create fun memories that capture your children’s interest and provide holiday memories at the same time!  Here’s how to do it:

Minecraft-Inspired Creeper Ornaments

Make these melty bead creepers with your Minecraft-loving kids!

What you’ll need to make the Minecraft creeper ornaments:

Our Minecraft creeper is built on an 8X8 square. This is large enough to include all of the necessary elements of a creeper face without overwhelming your Christmas tree. This size makes an ornament with a total height of about 3 inches.

Use the following pattern to make your creeper. When the pattern says “G” that can stand for any color of green. Creepers are a mix of greens, so don’t worry about getting the pattern exactly right. It is easiest if you make the face then add the hat on top of the face.

perlerbeadcreeper

Bead Pattern Key

  • G= Green
  • B= Black
  • R= Red
  • W=White
  • X= No beads

Creeper Face Pattern

  • GGGGGGGG
  • GGGGGGGG
  • GBBGGBBG
  • GBBGGBBG
  • GGGBBGGG
  • GGBBBBGG
  • GGBGGBGG
  • GGGGGGGG

Hat Pattern

  • XXXXRRXXXX
  • XXXRRRRWW
  • XXRRRRRRW
  • XRRRRRRX
  • WWWWWWWW

Place the beads on the tray according to the pattern (use the picture for guidance if you need help). After arranging all the beads, heat your iron to medium heat.

Place the paper over the beads and apply pressure with the heated iron for about 20 seconds. If the beads have fused together but not started to fold over, you’ve heated it long enough.

Remove the beads from the tray and flip the creeper over.

Place the paper on the exposed side of the creeper and iron for another 20 seconds to seal the second side.

Cut a string about 3 inches long. Glue to the back of the creeper with hot glue.

Your Minecraft ornament is ready to hang on your tree!
