Wonders of the World – A Global Book Class

Pack your bags and get ready to set off on a trip around the globe… PASSPORTS INCLUDED!

During this 12 week class, we will be visiting locations that are considered Wonders of the World, some ancient, some natural, and some man made. In class, we will use visual aids and discussion to learn more about each Wonder, while out of class, we will learn even more through additional printables, project making, and by reading books from the series “Where Is” (a branch of the “Who Was” series). This series of books brings a lot of powerful information on people, places, and events to children in a straightforward way. These books appeal to both boys and girls and are designed for seasoned readers and reluctant readers alike!

Each week, we will meet to discuss the book we read during the previous week (we will not read books in class). Learners will also be asked to make, and bring, a Wonder based project. This project is meant to spark some creativity, help with those that really benefit from hands on learning, and help bring history to life. Projects can be drawings, paintings, Lego builds, dioramas, a poem, or anything your child would like to create, to express their vision of what they learned about each Wonder. Projects will be shared during the class, which will encourage public speaking.

Prior to our first class, learners will be supplied with a passport, which can be made prior to, or during, our first class. Each week, I will supply learners with passport “stamps” to correlate with the Wonder of the week.

Our first class will be an introductory class, where we will set the structure of future classes and learn more about what makes a Wonder of the World, an actual Wonder. Future classes will be structured with a short introductory period, discussion time, in class visual aids, and sharing of projects. At the end of the course, learners will receive a certificate of completion.

Why take this class?
I like to approach learning from multiple perspectives. I want learners to enjoy learning and feel comfortable with their ideas. Using reading, audio and visual aids, printables, discussion, and hands-on learning, allows learners to experience what they are learning, not just remember what was put in front of them. My goal is for learners to learn and have fun while doing it, in hopes that they simply fall in love with learning.

Ages or grades of learners-
This class is designed to allow for students of various ages to participate, however, I would say the average range is 8-12. I have had learners outside this range, so if you have any questions, feel free to ask.

Books required-
These books can be purchased, downloaded, or borrowed from the library, but the list is as follows (in order they are discussed in class)…

Where Were the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World
Where Are the Great Pyramids
Where is the Colosseum
Where is the Taj Mahal
Where is Mount Everest
Where is the Great Wall
Where is the Great Barrier Reef
Where is Machu Picchu
Where is the Grand Canyon
Where is Niagara Falls
Where is Stonehenge

Books can be on tape, read, or read to learners, that is left up to the learner and guardian discretion. The books range from $3-$6 but can be borrowed from the library. For a one stop shop on Amazon for the books, visit this link
