Let’s time travel, learn some amazing facts about Ancient Egypt and China… and make some new friends!
During this 9 week class, we will be visiting Ancient Egypt and China and we will be doing this using 2 different book series. The first, the “Who Was” series. This series of books brings a lot of powerful information on people, places, and events to children in a straightforward way. The second, the “Magic Tree House” series. This series brings in a bit of historical fiction with Jack and Annie, but we will also be reading the accompanying Fact Finder, for more fact finding fun! Both of these series appeal to both boys and girls and are designed for seasoned readers, reluctant readers alike, and are great refresher books for older learners!
Before our adventure starts, I will give each learner a discovery journal to make so they will have a place to keep a log of our adventure. Each week I will also send a packet of educational and fun printables that can include a lesson plan, a vocabulary list, a crossword puzzle, a word search, a maze, a sheet of flash cards, among other things.
Each week our book club will meet to discuss the book we read during the previous week, with the exception of the first week, that is an introduction/activity based class (we will not read books in class). Learners will also be asked to bring a loosely assigned project to class. This project is meant to spark some creativity, help with those that really benefit from hands on learning, and help bring history to life. Projects will be assigned but are open to creativity and will use materials that are readily found around the home (paper, glue, and small box for example). Projects will be shared during the class meeting time, which will encourage public speaking, allowing learners to talk to each other and make friends!
Our first class will be an introductory class, where we will set the structure of future club meetings and learn more about Ancient Rome through discussion and slides, we will also do an in-class activity. Future classes will be structured with a short introductory period, discussion time, sharing of projects, and if time allows, in class visual aids and activities. Each week I will also send a printable to the classroom to help learners remember the key points of each book.
Why take this class?
I like to approach learning from multiple perspectives. I want learners to enjoy learning and feel comfortable with their ideas. Using reading, audio and visual aids, printables, discussion, and hands-on learning, allows learners to experience what they are learning, not just remember what was put in front of them. My goal is for learners to learn and have fun while doing it, in hopes that they simply fall in love with learning.
Ages or grades of learners-
This class is designed to allow for students of various ages to participate, however, I would say the average range is 7-11. I have had learners outside this range, so if you have any questions, feel free to ask.
No books are needed or required to be read prior to the first class. We begin reading AFTER the first class, meaning that books can be ordered as late as after the first class. These books can be purchased, downloaded, or borrowed from the library, but the list is as follows…

Beyond the reading of the book, children are asked to make a book based project each week. Books can be on tape, read, or read to learners, that is left up to the learner and guardian discretion.
