Explorers Historical Book Club (2022)

This class will take learners on a journey through the lives of some of the most famous navigators. To aid us on this journey, each learner will receive a discovery log to add to each week!

During this 10 week class, we will be learning about a historical individual, their lives, and the lands they visited. In class, we will use visual aids and discussion to learn more about each explorer, while out of class, we will learn even more through additional printables, project making, and by reading books from the book series “Who Was”. This series of books brings a lot of powerful information on people, places, and events to children in a straightforward way. These books appeal to both boys and girls and are designed for seasoned readers and reluctant readers alike!

Each week, we will meet to discuss the book we read during the previous week, with the exception of the first week, that is an introduction/activity based class (we will not read books in class). Learners will also be asked to make, and bring, a book based project. This project is meant to spark some creativity, help with those that really benefit from hands on learning, and help bring history to life. Projects can be drawings, paintings, Lego builds, dioramas, a poem, or anything your child would like to create, to express their vision of what they learned about each Wonder. Projects will be shared during the class, which will encourage public speaking.

Prior to our first class, learners will be supplied with a discovery log, which can be made prior to, or during, our first class. Each week, I will supply learners with items to put into the logs, that correlate with the explorer of the week.

Our first class will be an introductory class, where we will set the structure of future classes and learn more about some of the places explored. Future classes will be structured with a short introductory period, discussion time, in class visual aids, and sharing of projects. At the end of the course, learners will receive a certificate of completion.

Why take this class?
I like to approach learning from multiple perspectives. I want learners to enjoy learning and feel comfortable with their ideas. Using reading, audio and visual aids, printables, discussion, and hands-on learning, allows learners to experience what they are learning, not just remember what was put in front of them. My goal is for learners to learn and have fun while doing it, in hopes that they simply fall in love with learning.

Ages or grades of learners-
This class is designed to allow for students of various ages to participate, however, I would say the average range is 8-12. I have had learners outside this range, so if you have any questions, feel free to ask.

Books required-
No books are needed or required to be read prior to the first class. We begin reading AFTER the first class, meaning that books can be ordered as late as after the first class. These books can be purchased, downloaded, or borrowed from the library, but the list is as follows (in order they are discussed in class)…

  • What was the Age of Exploration
  • Who Was Leif Erickson
  • Who Was Marco Polo
  • Who Was Christopher Columbus
  • Who Was Ferdinand Magellan
  • Who Was Ernest Shackleton
  • Who Was Jacques Cousteau
  • Who Was Neil Armstrong

*Beyond the reading of the book, children are asked to make a book based project each week. Books can be on tape, read, or read to learners, that is left up to the learner and guardian discretion.
